Muktijoddha Sangsad Krira Chakra’s title dream suffered a blow when they were held to a 2-2 draw by Mohammedan Sporting Club in a high-voltage match of the Bangladesh Premier League on Tuesday.
The title aspirants, Muktijoddha, took the lead twice with Nasiruddin Chowdhury and Wellington De Souza Lima respectively only to see Mohammedan equalising in both the occasions through Nduka Uwa and Ude Chiogozie.
Half an hour into the game, Nasir scored the opener for the Muktis after he took control of a Shakil Ahmed cross and avoided the challenge of diving Mohammedan goalie Titumir Chowdhury to place the ball on the back of the net from the middle of the box.
However, Mohammedan’s Nigerian striker Nduka Uwa brought his side back in the game scoring within 10 minutes.
Wahed Ahmed won the ball from Muktijoddha defender Ariful Islam and passed it to Nduka Uwa who went past goalie Mustak Ahmed for an easy finish.
Lima regained the lead for Muktijoddha a minute before the breather with an outstanding free-kick from nearly 10 yards outside the penalty area.
Mohammedan exerted pressure and eventually equalised for the second time in the 76th minute through a penalty.
The decision by the referee though triggered a huge chaos among the players and the officials that kept the match stopped for five minutes and play resumed after the referee had to caution four Muktis’ players.
Mohammedan’s defencive midfielder Mohammad Yeasin was fouled by Muktijoddha’s Shakil just inside the box in the 71st minute resulting in a penalty kick which was successfully converted by Udeh.
The draw kept Muktijoddha Sangsad at the second place, two points behind table toppers Abahani Limited, with 31 points from 15 outings while Mohammedan are at fourth position with 21 points from 14 matches.
