Brothers Union shined lately when they blanked Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra by 2-0 in the Citycell Bangladesh League on Thursday at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.
Meanwhile, Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra became the first team to finish their Citycell Bangladesh league campaigns securing third position with 50 points from 24 matches. Champions Abahani Limited and runners-up Mohammedans are also on the verge of completing their league engagements when they will face each in their last match of the league on June 2.
Brothers, one of the top seeded teams and also the former Dhaka Premier Division League champions, this time gave a very poor account of themselves as it was their just fifth win out of 23 outings.
On the other hands it was the fourth defeat for the Sheikh Russel, that did not make any impact to claim third place of the league.
Murad Ahmed Milon sent Brothers into lead in this tension free match with both teams playing with some attacking approach.
Trailing by a 0-1 first half, Russel started the second half with a series of attacks and also produced two early chances but strikers duo failed to find the target. Brothers doubled the margin from a counter attack when Taru made the tally 2-0 on 59th minute.
Rest of the half an hour of the match was also entertaining as Russel tried to bounce back to gain some pride avoiding the defeat in the last match of the season and Brothers were also in offensive mood to keep their lead.
In the day’s other match at the Chittagong MA Aziz Stadium, thanks to a lone strike form Rony, Chittagong Abahani Limited defeated Soccer Club of Feni by a solitary goal.
It was Ctg Abahani’s fifth win which helped them almost avoid the relegation threat obtaining 21 points from 23 matches.
Rony slotted the all-important goal of the match against the favourites in the early 17h minute.
