Raja Mia, who was detained in Tangail in relation to a robbery and rape that occurred inside of a moving bus, has been placed on a five-day remand.
Police brought him before the court with a seven-day remand plea on Thursday, 4 August, and Tangail Senior Judicial Magistrate Badal Kumar Chand granted the remand after a hearing, according to Public Prosecutor Tanveer Ahmed.Read more
Detective cops detained Raja Mia earlier on Thursday morning at his residence in the city’s Deola district.
Raja Mia reportedly confessed to his role in the robbery and named his accomplices, according to investigating officer Murad Hossain.
From the arrestee’s possession, police found two sticks, a pair of scissors, and three stolen passenger cell phones.
A bus driver himself, Raja Mia is the son of Harun ur Rashid of Balla village in Kalihati upazila.
Raja Mia drove the vehicle himself throughout the heist after getting control of it from the Eagle Transport driver.
The rape victim claimed that the thieves bound the wrists and faces of the passengers one by one while blindfolding them. Even the kids were similarly restrained.
“After looting everyone, they brutally tortured the female passengers. The woman sitting next to the robber was raped four times,” she added.
“We could not do anything because we were blindfolded and our hands and faces were tied,” said the woman.
Another passenger, Shilpi Begum of Taragunia village of Daulatpur police station area, said, “I was taking my daughter to Dhaka for treatment. Our eyes, mouths and hands were tied up by the robbers who looted us. My husband was stabbed in the hand with a knife. They took Tk30,000 from us.”
Tangail Senior Judicial Magistrate Rumi Khatun recorded the rape victim’s statement.
She was produced in the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Badal Kumar Chander who ordered her to be sent to Tangail General Hospital for treatment.
