Fertiliser plants to close for gas supply to power houses

March 30, 2010

The government has decided to close down some fertiliser factories temporarily to divert gas to the power plants.
The decision came at a high level meeting held at the Power division yesterday. State minister for power Brig (Rtd) Enamul Huq chaired the meeting which was also attended by energy adviser Toufiq E Elahi Chowdhury, secretaries of the power and energy divisions, PDB chairman and chairman of Petrobangla.
The meeting was told that the power generation could be enhanced by at least 500 mw if the gas was diverted to the power plants.
At least 100 million mmcfd gas could be provided to the power plants if the production in Ghorashal, KAFCO and Jamuna fertiliser plants was stopped temporarily, sources said.
Due to short supply of gas, production RPCL (175 MW), Raozan (180 MW), NEPC(110 MW) and Siddhirganj (210 MW) were limited to 88 MW,140 MW, 44 MW and 150 MW respectively as on last Sunday.
