Jatiya Party chairman Hussain Muhammad Ershad on Thursday appeared before a Dhaka court in connection with the murder case of Major General MA Monjoor in 1981.

The case has been running for 18 years and at least 12 judges were changed, Ershad’s counsel Advocate Sheikh Sirajul Islam said.
Regarding the procrastination, he said, such a long time was not required to dispose of a case if it ran at usual pace.
“The prosecution filed time petition so far for four times this year. The court set July 18 to hear further arguments of the case,” he said.
Monjoor was shot dead on June 1, 1981 at Chittagong Cantonment.
The case was filed with Panchlaish police station in Chittagong on February 28, 1995, 14 years after the incident. The process of the trial started in the same year.
Later, the case was transferred to the Dhaka court due to security reasons.
A total of 28 witnesses gave their testimony in the case. But Ershad claimed his innocence in writing on October 2 last year.
