Moushumi: Committed to her craft
With several upcoming TV plays, National Film Award winner Moushumi hardly has any time to unwind. She has performed in Partho Sarker’s Eid ul Azha special one-hour play “Otopor Ek Cup Cha”, acting opposite Sajal. In the drama, Moushumi plays the role of a confident urban woman. The actress informs that she appeared in every single scene of the play — the shooting for which was held at Uttara. Moushumi adds that she also worked with Partho Sarker during last Eid ul Fitr, in the drama “To be or not to be”.
The film star was also busy this month with the shooting of another Eid special drama, titled “Kajoler Ontordhan”, directed by Nuzhat Alvi Ahmed and written by Kabir Bakul. Moushumi plays the eponymous role. The actress says, “I played a superstar who has now gone out of the limelight. I liked the story a lot and enjoyed working on the production.”
The busy actress also worked in another short, yet untitled play by Ishtiaque Ahmed Romel. Moushumi adds that there is a possibility of working in more Eid specials, but only if she gets good scripts.
Apart from her recent rush for the TV, Moushumi made time to work in a new film “Shohagpur”. The much anticipated “Debdas” is also awaiting release, where Moushumi will be playing Chandramukhi. The actress says “I’m very optimistic about the film. The audience will enjoy watching the movie”. Veteran filmmaker Chashi Nazrul Islam is the director of “Debdas”. Other films featuring Moushumi awaiting release are — FI Manik’s “Shoubhaggo”, Zahid Hassain’s “Jibon Jontrona” and Nayeem Imtiaz Neamul’s “Ek Cup Cha”.
Asked about her infrequent appearance in films, Moushumi says, “I’ve achieved many things in my life, the most important of which is the admiration and love of the audience. Since I cannot repay their love, I don’t want to cheat them by working in every other movie. I only want to act in selective roles where the viewers will get diverse performances from me. For this reason, I am only choosing a handful of films.”
Moushumi’s 20- year career began with “Keyamat Theke Keyamat”, where she paired up with the late Salman Shah. The versatile actress has displayed her talents in movies on the genres of Liberation War, literature, folk, fantasy, social and off-track. She has also made her mark as a film director.
Apart from acting, Moushumi has also acted as a judge — in the final stages of the TV competition “Super Hero Super Heroine”. Currently, she is also a judge on the Channel 9 reality show “Power Voice”. As part of the programme, Moushumi recently travelled to Khulna and Barisal to act as a judge in the auditions. She expresses the hope that the competition will help discover many singing talents across the country.
Asked what her aspirations are at this stage of her career, Moushumi says, “I only want to work in quality films, so that I can preserve the reputation that I have built over the years and the audience remembers me for my talent.”
