Rihanna pledges $15 million to climate justice

January 26, 2022

Pop singer Rihanna’s foundation, the Clara Lionel Foundation, is donating $15 million to organizations combating climate change and striving for social justice.
“Climate disasters, which are growing in frequency and intensity, do not impact all communities equally, with communities of color and island nations facing the brunt of climate change,” the pop singer said in a statement.
The damaging effects of climate change threaten everyone, but communities of color are more vulnerable to these consequences due to existing social inequities. Rising sea levels caused by climate change threaten the people and flora and fauna of island countries, while natural disasters like hurricanes are becoming increasingly destructive due to warming ocean waters.
“To combat this inequity, funders must build partnerships with organizations, acknowledging their deep understanding of what is necessary to achieve climate justice in their own communities,” the foundation said on its website.
The donation is being made in partnership with Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey’s #StartSmall initiative and will be given to organizations working across the United States and Caribbean.
