Tax return submission deadline extended to Nov 2

September 30, 2014

The National Board of Revenue on Monday extended the deadline for submission of income tax returns for individual taxpayers by one month, officials said.
Taxpayers will be able to file their returns till November 2, they said.
The original deadline is set to expire today.Closing date for filing tax returns has been extended due to poor response from the taxpayers till now, the officials said.
The revenue board, however, argued that many taxpayers would not be able to complete the procedures of submitting returns within the last date of September 30 due to celebration of forthcoming Eid-ul-Azha and Durga Puja festivals.
Many Hajj aspirants will not be able to file their returns as they have already left the country for performing Hajj, it said in a summery prepared for finance minister AMA Muhith.
Till Monday, the NBR did not accumulate the data regarding how many taxpayers so far submitted their returns, they said.
Around 1.50 lakh taxpayers submitted their returns at the income tax fair across the country organised by the revenue board in September 16-22.
A good number of taxpayers have filed their returns at tax circles across the country during July-September, they said.
According to Income Tax Ordinance, individual taxpayers are supposed to file their returns within July 1 to September 30 if the NBR does not extend the deadline.
The revenue board usually almost every year extends the deadline citing poor response from the taxpayers in filing returns within the timeframe and upon requests from trade bodies and tax lawyers association.
A taxpayer, however, can personally apply for extension of the deadline citing appropriate reasons and deputy commissioners of taxes can give him a three-month extension for filing the return.
Joint commissioner of taxes may also allow three more months to a taxpayer for submission of income tax return,
