Sprinter Sumaiya leaves for Kenya
Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan athlete Sumaiya Dewan on Sunday left for Nairobi, Kenya, to take part in the women’s 100 metre sprint event of the 2021 World Athletics U-20 Championships, scheduled to be held from August 17 to 22.
Sumaiya is scheduled to compete in the heats on August 18, a day before the final of the event at the Nyayo Sports Complex.
The 18-year old Sumaiya, who competed in the Under-17 category for a gold medal in 100 metre sprint of the National Junior Athletics Championships in 2018, will run in the Under-18 age category in Nairobi.
BKSP athletics coach Foujia Huda Jui is accompanying Sumaiya in the tour as a coach-cum-manager, said a Bangladesh Athletics Federation media release.
A total of 973 athletes from 117 countries are expected to compete in 44 events of World Athletics Junior Championships, which was originally scheduled to be held in 2020 but was forced to shift for a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
