Golden girl Shila back in pool

Mahfuza Khatun Shila, who won two gold medals in SA Games 2016 and left the previous national meet in 2016 injured, clinched gold on her comeback in the 29th National Swimming, Diving and Water polo Competition on Tuesday.
Shila clocked 01:19:60 in the 100m breaststroke at the Syed Nazrul Islam Swimming Complex on the third day of the four-day long competition.
She also shared the gold in 4x100m women’s freestyle relay title pairing with her Bangladesh Navy team-mate Sonia Akter, Sonia Khatun Tumpa and Lima Akter as they clocked 04:30:95.
Meanwhile, Junaina Ahmed of Navy and Jewel Ahmed of Bangladesh Army continued their dominance as both set two more new national records on the day.
Junaina set new national records in the 200m women’s butterfly, clocking 02:34:14 to break the previous record of 02:41:03 set by Rumana Akter in 2016.
She set another record in the 400m women’s freestyle, clocking 04:53:31 to surpass Nazma Khatun’s 2016 record of 05:07:10 seconds.
Jewel set new national record in the men’s 50m backstroke, clocking 28:12 seconds to break his own record of 28:30 set in 2016.
He set another record in the 200m butterfly, clocking 2:11:57 surpassing a 15-year old record of 2:12:12 set up by Navy swimmer Jewel Ahmed in 2004.
A total of 28 events were held until the third day with 17 new records so far.
Navy team swimmers were dominating the medals tally with 20 golds, 15 silvers and 11 bronzes while Army secured eight golds 12 silvers and 12 bronzes. Bagura Swimming Centre bagged one silver medal while Amla Swimming Club and Pabna District Sports Association bagged one bronze medal each.
