Gayle smashes records in Rangpur win

December 8, 2017

Chris Gayle became the first batsman to hit a century in the fifth edition of Bangladesh Premier League as Rangpur Riders defeated Khulna Titans in the eliminator at Sher-e Bangla National Stadium on Friday.
Gayle struck 126 off 51 deliveries, his fourth century in BPL and the highest score in tournament history, helping Rangpur race to 171-2 in just 15.2 overs after they had earlier restricted Khulna to 167-6 in 20 overs.
On his way to marauding century, Gayle smashed 14 sixes, another record in BPL overtaking his own record of 12 sixes against Sylhet Royals for Dhaka Gladiators in 2013.
Chasing a challenging score, Rangpur lost Shohag Gazi (1) and Brendon McCullum (0) early but Gayle and Mohammad Mithun (30) shared 146 runs, a record for third-wicket in BPL, which completed the win.
Earlier, quite a few batsmen – Michael Klinger (21), Mahmudullah (20), Ariful Haque (29), Nicolas Pooran (28) and Carlos Brathwaite (25) – of Khulna got the start but failed to convert them into big innings. Lasith Malinga picked two wickets for Rangpur.
Rangpur will face the loser of the first qualifier between Comilla Victorians and Dhaka Dynamites on Sunday.
