March 31, 2012

A Dhaka University teacher yesterday took a class of some students of a private university at DU’s business studies faculty violating rules.
Professor Ali Ahsan of Department of Management Studies was found taking the class of around 30 students of American International University of Bangladesh (AIUB) around 12:00 noon.
On information, this correspondent went to the MBA building of the business studies faculty and found Prof Ahsan giving lecture at room number 203.
Contacted in the afternoon over the phone, he denied the allegation, and claimed it was a class of an evening MBA batch of the DU.
Two of the AIUB students, however, said Prof Ahsan, who is a part-time teacher at the private university, asked them to come to the DU business faculty for the class as he was busy with some tasks at his department.
Wishing anonymity, the two students of BBA also admitted that their class was held between 12:00 noon and 1:30pm.
DU Vice Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique told The Daily Star that the university authority is looking into the matter with utmost importance. “If the allegation is proved, we’ll take action as per the rules,” he said.
Contacted, Professor Emeritus of the Department of Philosophy Aminul Islam said, “If any teacher takes such a class, we’ve to know first whether he or she got permission from the DU authorities.”
“If he took the class for private university students at a DU classroom without prior permission, it is truly an example of deviation of sense of duty and morality”, he told The Daily Star.
He further said, “It’s a unique incident. But a teacher can take such classes after receiving permission of the university authorities concerned, considering that such job is not harming education of the students at his own department.”
