Blockade call by UZ chairmen, Vice-chairmen

Bangladesh Upazila Chairman-Vice Chairman Oikya Parishad has announced a two-hour road, rail and waterways blockade on April 15.
The road, rail and waterways blockade programme across the country will be held from 10.00 am to 12.00 pm on the day to protest against not fulfilling their 10-point charter of demands. To realise their demands, the chairmen and vice chairmen organised a human chain programme in front of the National Press Club in the city yesterday. Several Chairmen and Vice-Chairmen from different upazilas of the country addressed the programme.
The human chain programme is over, the Parishad’s chairmen and vice chairmen started a procession towards the Prime Minister’s Office for submitting a memorandum in favour of their demands. But the police barricaded the procession when they reached near the Institution of Engineers Bangladesh.
Overcoming the obstacle when they reached Shahbagh, the police intercepted the procession. At the time they sit there on the road and organised a demonstration. From the programme, convener of the Oikya Parishad Advocate Abdul Mazid announced the blockade programme.
The Parishad also announced that they would observe the mass fast-unto-death programme on April 25 at Muktangan in the city if their demands are not fulfilled by the time.
Later, a team of the Oikya Parishad submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Office led by its convener Advocate Abdul Mazid.
It is to be noted that the upazila Chairman and Vice Chairman on March 27 at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity placed an ultimatum to the government to fulfil their demands by March 30. They also threatened that if their demands are not fulfil, they would launch a tough movement in the country.
The 10-point demands included strengthening the local government bodies.
