DCC polls likely in May: CEC

January 30, 2010

The Dhaka City Corpo-ration (DCC) polls will be held in May if the writ petition filed with the High Court (HC) seeking demarcation of the DCC wards based on the latest census is settled within the time, the Chief Election Commi-ssioner (CEC) said, reports The Financial Express.
CEC ATM Shamsul Huda disclosed the plan while talking to newsmen at a get-together of Dhaka University History Department Alumni Association (DUHDAA) on the university’s TSC premises Friday.
CEC Huda also said elections to the Union Parishads would begin in May while the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) election will be held at a suitable time this year.
The CEC said the Election Commission (EC) wants to delimit the DCC wards after holding its polls in May, if the HC permits.
“Demarcation is a complex job. Completion of the task will take at least six months. The process will get momentum if once we can start.” the CEC said.
Mr Huda said the academic curricula and research activities of DU should be reformed and expedited to keep pace with the competitive world, referring to the university’s exclusion from the list of world’s top 100 universities.
