Chobi Mela VI begins Jan 21

Chobi Mela VI, a two-week international photography festival, begins January 21, 2011 in the Dhaka city.
It was disclosed at a press conference organised by Drik at its Dhanmondi office on Tuesday.
Works of artistes from 30 countries will be put on display in the festival with the theme ‘dreams’, said Shahidul Alam, festival director and also managing director of Drik, at news briefing.
Alliance Francaise de Dhaka, Beximco Group, British Council, Drik, Goethe-Institute, Norwegian embassy and Pathshala are partners of the international festival, he said.
The festival will be opened at Shilpakala Academy Natyashala on January 21 and parallel exhibitions will be held at Alliance Francaise, Asiatic Gallery of Fine Arts, British Council, Drik Gallery, Goethe-Institute and Fine Arts faculty Lichutala of Dhaka University, he said.
He said eight workshops, two portfolio reviews and a weeklong discussions, seminars and lectures will be held at Goethe-Institute auditorium, initiating debates and discussions on contemporary photographic practice.
A video conference with International Criminal Court prosecutor Dr Luis Moreno-Ocampo will be held on January 22, 2011 at Goethe-Institute, he said.
‘I dream that Chobi Mela will play a role in re-writing the history of photography, and correcting the extremely Eurocentric version of history that is currently propagated,’ he also said.
He informed that mobile exhibition on rickshaw-vans will be held in different city points of Old Dhaka, Kamarangir Char and Gabtoli so that the people of all walks can enjoy the national and international photos.
Chobi Mela curatorial director ASM Rezaur Rahman was also present in the conference.
