Padma flows above danger mark: Over 1000 families marooned in Faridpur

The flood situation of the country excepting the northeastern districts may deteriorate in the next two to three days, according sources in the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC).
Sources said the flood situation has started improving in the northern districts gradually but the prevailing flash flood situation in the north-eastern districts may worsen further.
The FFWC monitored water levels at 73 stations in the country out of which 37 stations recorded rise and recession at 36 stations. A total of 12 stations, including the river Kobodak at Jhikargacha, the Surma at Kanaighat and the Kushiyara at Amalshid are flowing above 22cm, 82cm and 74 cm above danger levels respectively.
More low-lying areas in the districts of Sirajganj, Tangail, Rajbari, Faridpur, Madaripur, Shariatpur, Manikganj, Munshiganj, and Dohar and Nababganj upazilas of Dhaka are likely to inundate by the next two to three days, the sources said.
The Padma at Goalondo, the Khoai at Habiganj and the Jamuna at Naogaon are flowing 21cm, 3cm and 4cm respectively above their danger marks.
Our Sylhet Correspondent said the flood situation in different upazilas in Sylhet further worsened and vast low-lying areas are now under the grip of flood.
Though heavy rain has stopped from Saturday, but the flood situation worsened than past 3/4 days due to onrush of hilly waters flowing on fresh areas.
The flood-affected upozilas include Kanaighat, Zokigonj, Companigonj, Goainghat, Jointapur and Bianibazar. Thousands of people of the upozilas are suffering seriously by flood. They have been passing their days with much agony.
The river Surma and Kushiara, which flow through Sylhet, are flowing above the danger marks in three points.
The water flow at Kanaighat point in Surma is now flowing above 0.57 centimeters of the danger mark.
The vast areas of crop lands of the above mentioned upozilas are also under the grip of flood and farmers are concerned about their cultivation.
Agricultural experts said if the flood continues for long time, harvesting of Aous and Aman will be impossible.
The Surma at Sunamganj, the Kangsha at Jariajanjail, the Kushiyara at Sheola, the Padma at Bhagyakul and the Karatoa at Chak-Rahimpur are flowing 42cm, 155cm, 52cm, 30cm, 39cm above danger levels.
In Gaibandha, the flood waters started to recede from the district, except Gobindaganj upazila, due to the water level falling in the Brahmaputra, the Teesta and the Ghagot rivers over the last 24 hours ending at 6:00am yesterday morning.
But, Gobindanganj upazila of the district went under flood waters as the Karotowa river continued to swell over the same period.
With the Karotoa in spate, new areas in Gobindaganj upazila have been submerged and the Gobindanganj-Ghoraghat Ragional Highway at Gumaniganj Koiaganj, Tarafmanu and Khalshi Shandp areas went under knee deep water hampering traffic movement.
In Rajbari, water level of the Padma at Goalondo point has sharply increased.
The Padma was flowing above 14cm danger marks from 6am on Saturday to 6:00am on Sunday.
In Dinajpur, low-lying areas and the rivers, canals and beels of the district were over flooded due to continuous rainfall.
Major rivers of the district are flowing below danger marks slightly. The Water Development Board sources said the rivers of the district might cross their respective danger marks if rainfall continues.
In Jamalpur, the overall flood situation slightly improved today but stable in Islampur upazila.
During the last 24 hours, the Jamuna receded 11cm at Bahadurabad Ghat point but the water level in the old Brahmaputra rose by 7 cm. Water Development Board said both the rivers were flowing below the respective danger marks.
In Manikganj, a vast char area of Daulatpur and Shibalaya upazila have been inundated due to on-rush of water from the upstream while some parts of the Padma-Jamuna embankment near Nihalpur has been damaged due to strong current of the Jamuna.
In Tangail, the river erosion has taken a serious turn at 17 villages under two upazila of the district due to strong current of the river Jamuna.
Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) sources said the water level at the Aricha point of the Jamuna reached the danger level with a rise by 12 cm during the last 24 hours. Now the Jamuan at the Aricha point is flowing only 18 cm below the danger
level.
Hundreds of families were marooned in Faridpur, as the Padma River was flowing 21cm above the danger mark at Goalundo point on Sunday, leaving low-lying areas in Sadar and Char Bhadrashan upazilas inundated.
Aliabad, Charmadhabdia and Dikrirchar of Faridpur Sadar upazila, and Charhajiganj and Charjhaukanda union of Char Bhadrason upazila, were among the worst hit as Padma waters swelled, WDB officials said.
At least 500 families in Gadadhardangi, Bhajandangi and Sadipur of Aliabad union have been marooned as floodwater inundated low-lying areas, said union parishad member Md Akteruzzaman.
Pupils at Sadipur Government Primary School and Gadadhardangi Government Primary School were taking their examinations on roadside benches after water inundated their classrooms, said Akteruzzaman.
Meanwhile, our Nilphamari Correspondent said two flood victims were killed by drowning in the river Teesta when their boat was capsized while they were moving to safer place on Friday night.
The two victims are identified as Desar uddin, son of late Khalil uddin and Jalal uddin, son of Naimuddin.
Both of them hailed from Purbo Baish pukur village of Khalisha chapani union under Dimla upazila.
They were shifting to safer places with household goods as their houses were inundated under 3-4 feet water as the Teesta crossed the danger mark and was flowing 40 centimeter above the danger mark.
There were 13 flood victims in the boat. The rest 11 passengers jumped in the river to swim to the bank of the river.
Fire service divers from Rangpur reached the spot and conducted rescue operation for their dead bodies but failed.
The chairman of Khalisha chapani union Ataur Rahman acknoledged the incident and said that 18-20 boats were moving together to shift to safer place. At that time one of them capsized.
